Welcome to Hamilton OTs Pead's blogg

Hi Everyone. Well we now officially have our own blog. This blog is one way that OT's interested in Pead's (school based, hospital, ACC and clinic based) working in the Waikato can network, share ideas, and discuss issues important to us.

We are trying blogging as a way to further our group learning, alongside twice yearly four hour forums. The blog will be used to capture thoughts, as well as assist in arranging the development of these forums.

Hi Rita and Cassandra
Great to meet in cyperspace! It is exciting to think where to this might be taking us:)

Well done.

Hi Annette, you obviously have technology skills posting a picture as well as a comment!! It will be interesting to see if we can make this work for us in a really meaningful way, beyond networking, making a difference in our practice and thinking. Possibly this is could be something that we openly think about when sharing with each other - has what we have blogged about changed our thinking.....that motivates me to post about the OPC!

I have info on another product but it is at work...so will forward it at later date.
Did you all get the lovely email from Clare.

Hi Annette, your can't do attachments. Yes it is possible to hyper link - you do it under customize - otherwise send it to me and I will do it. There is lots to learn - the good thing is that over time, sharing skills and through using this we will learn.

Hi dudes,

I was just looking at the specs of the EeePc, overall it looks great; the weight, battery life and start time time addresses most of the porblems kids experience with laptops in schools.

Just one comment about the specs, it looks to me (although they have set out the specs in a way that I am not all that familiar with) that it only has a 1Gb hard drive. When I say 'only' that is really more than enough for most. I would want to double check if you were thinking about running Dragon or Vista on it though.

Any more info on gadgets like this would be much appreciated.

Thank you Rita for the time you spent with us. I came away wondering how to document emotional support in a way that was evidenced base. Information exchange and structured process is easy to document and have measurable goals for. I am wondering if the feedback forms we send and any letters of thanks would show that in fact you have provided the emotional support required to facilitate change. And interesting points you made regarding the shared tools and terminology. The papers that I am doing at AUT on child health are nursing led papers - the lecturers determined to "return to nursing from the past which looked at whole of life" I have to say that being the only therapist it was evident from the discussions that nursing has both feet firmly in the medical model- their case study discussions were what drugs the children were on, surgical interventions and daily nursing checks. However the discussions did make me realize that we do need that medical information so we can provide safe advice. It has been an interesting paper for me - have I strayed too far from the medical model ????
I am loving this way to discuss - seems less threatening for me then CHYPOT.

Hi Dot - Have we strayed to far from the medical model......would it be fair to say that when children are well - that straying away from the medical model is OK and needed otherwise they get stuck being in the sick role.

Another way to think about it is being able to identify or have enough knowledge to know when you need to access that medical model information or the people with that information.......and that leads me to think.....should the parents be the holder of that information, and inform us rather than the other way around?

Do you think having this information about the drugs etc improves your practice in the service that you currently work in?

It is a good question...the thing about the medical model is that it is deficit based which is quite opposite from GSE strengths based approach.

I need to think some more I might post it up as a big post rather than a comment....

As for how to document emotional support in an evidenced based way......I hadn't even thought about that one!

Catch yah later. Rita

Hi guys

Now I realize the risk of some emotional attachments and perhaps even some invested interests... but I feel safe asking you all this very personal question - as aforeigner to the NZOT post grad pathways hoping you can share some light on the following:
We – Lisa and I - would love you to share with us why you chose the post grad pathway you did …and help us to make informed decisions to why we should choose one post grad course above another …as we are getting serious about studying in 2009!!!
We had his email from Otago today :
Well its that time of the year again, it certainly seems like it has come around extra fast this year!!

To keep you in the loop and to help you plan your study for 2009 I have attached the semester one, course flyers and the 2009 Postgraduate Calendar for your information.

We have a variety of courses on offer in 2009:

Our core courses: Clinical Reasoning, Qualitative Research in Practice and Quantitative Research in Practice.

Courses back on offer by popular demand: Assessment of Motor & Process Skills (AMPS), Language by Hand: Handwriting for Children and Young People, Occupational Therapy, Motivation and Behavioural Change, Cognitive Approaches for Children with Disabilities, Mental Health: Issues for Occupational Therapists, Pain Management and Negotiated Study.

Courses back from a rest: Wheelchairs & Seating and Beyond the Basics: Steps for Future Eldercare Practice.

New courses: Small Business Practice for the Health Professions and Client Education.

Remember we are now rolling out the revised programme with all of our courses now being worth 20 credits. The fees have gone up per course as expected but .... because for the Diploma you now only need to successfully complete six courses instead of eight the overall cost of the programme is very similar (slight increase to adjust for increased costs).

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you would like any further information on any of these courses or an enrolment pack sent out.

THANKS A LOT FOR YOUR SUPPORT IN THIS WORLD OF CHOICES:)

Cheers
Annette

Hi - for me, I started with AUT - Enabling Occupation is good. I did it online - it was a challenge as it was my first course and I don't think anyone else was doing the course so it was pretty solo, and my first postgrad experience so lots of extra things to learn - like how to write!. Then I traveled up and did Occupational Science. Loved this course! liked hanging out with other OT's, and PT's however too many small babies meant that going up for days of learning wasn't a happening thing. So I switch to Otago. There online support was better developed than AUT - this way of learning let me fit life around study more easily. Plus they would let me carry on beyond a certifciate without having to do a bridging research paper....(I had a Diplomia) .Dot can tell you more about that. I think my first course with Otago was Clinical Reasoning which I also loved! I'm someone who does better with going away and thinking about things - so online learning suits this process. I facilitate Cognitive approaches, and as you are aware the handwriting course -so I can tell you about them in detail just give me a ring. All the postgrad courses have adult teaching principles in mind which allow you to apply your area of interest to the assignment and to the learning tasks. This I think is the key to why I got hooked into post grad learning. I am willing to help you in anyway possible - no matter who you sign up with. Hope that helped. Rita

Hopefully I'm not too late to comment on this posting..... the other thing to remember is that you don't have to solely keep with one institution (although at some point you do have to commit to one to finish your award!)...Dot and Rita are both examples of people who have done some with AUT and some with Otago. We are very flexible in Otago!!

Oh.. and also if you are thinking longer term for masters research, you may want to think about the institution - look at the theses, and the focus - Otago's is strongly grounded in practice - addressing issues arising from practice.... and there are three of us with experience in working in child and youth based services who can supervise, and possibly others coming on board at Wintec as the Otago programme is established there.

Dear Rita and Merrolee

Thanks a lot for your postings. I have found it very helpful in this early stage of the process trying to familiarise myself with the different pathways available out there. I really appreciate you both sharing experiences and knowledge but more importantly the enthusiasm and passion you both have for this – as it provides added support enabling me to believe that we can actually do it! GREAT STUFF.
I will be contacting Debbie or Penelope on Monday to clarify my situation in regards to holding a certificate in Occupational Therapy from Copenhagen, Denmark, 1989. I have lived and worked as an OT in NZ since 1991…but just in case I have to meet some specific requirements differently to those with an English language based qualification – I better clarify that one :)

Any other OT from the Hamilton Paediatric Forum considering starting Post Grad studies in 2009 - wanting to join Lisa and I in getting up and running. Lisa and I were thinking Rita might like to join us somewhere nice...with a cup of coffee... and have a more in dept talk?
Let us know if you want to join us before we approch Rita with this invite:)

Cheers for now…
Annette
