Reflective Listening

Hi. I've just read a book called Motivational Interviewing (2nd ed)2002. Miller Rollnick. This book has heaps in it about this technique, which I will write more about in time. In particular I was challenged by the authors ponderings that people who think they are reflective listeners are often not quite as good at it as they think they are. I thought possibly we could do a hands on activity practicing this skill and feeding back to each other in a safe way at one of our meeting days.

Wondering if anyone else had other possible topics for our next get together?

Catch yah later. Rita

I have heard a lot of good things about this technique, it is popular in mental health and people have recommended I read the book so I would love to learn more about it. Where did you get the book from Rita?

Hi Stephanie, An OT friend who works in mental health came across a chapter of it while doing Trish's postgrad course from Otago Facilitating Behavioral Change, which she loved. It was part of the core readings. She got the book out of the library, loved it so much, bought the book. Lent it to me, which I have now read, love it so much are also going to buy the book. So once I have my own copy you can borrow mind.

Although used as a tool within mental health especailly addiction work, it could easily be applied to anyone wanting to support a change in a behavior, for example providing more structure in the household routines, facilitating more independence rather than helplessness or being more assertive when communicating with others, being more active, taking more time for things deemed important to that person.

I'll let you know when I get my copy. Rita
